The problem with Stanley Prison is that it's empty. Constable Bragg needs a prisoner—for a day, or maybe two—just to show that he's doing his job. He sends his half-witted jailer outside to find himself a criminal. There's a boy that lives down by the docks, minding his own business, until the jailer cries, "Thief!" If a frightened boy takes a rowboat, does that make him a pirate? The jailer thinks it does. A real pirate would know better. A real pirate would go on a rampage as fast as he could, plotting to lay blame on the innocent boy. But what does that matter? There hasn't been a pirate in a hundred years.

When I started reading this book I was gripped. Very cleverly written, incorporating some great characters and situations. A boy, 14, reads newspapers to the older men but the town needs a prisoner as election day is coming so the jailer decides to arrest the boy. Scared, he escapes in a rowboat. Later he escapes once again on the schooner, Marigold as he hears he is threatened with the gallows. Nobody knows his name so call him SOMBAR for the WANTED posters. The whole town is in panic and uproar and what occurs is quite hilarious. Amazing how one little action can turn into something major, totally out of proportion.HOWEVER in the middle of this book, the story stagnates and you have many pages of being stuck on a ship, alcohol, a swear word being thrown in, too much mundane and too little adventure. (It starts off really clean with no cursing or inappropriate behavior.)
The ending is pretty good if you stick with it that long. This is a story that would be great if shorter, taking out some of the middle.

A wonderful tale of hardship and adventure about a vagabond boy who perseveres, whether rowing a boat not fit for sea or being taken prisoner. He's the happiest boy in the world when he gets to go to school, but it doesn't last long. He's soon taken prisoner on a pirate ship and exposed to rude pirates, sea battle and a sinking ship. Michael Megliola is a natural born storyteller with amusing anecdotes for all, and great sea adventure scenes especially for middle-school aged boys. He keeps us fascinated while showing how the system can shape what we become and encouraging hope and freewill.
The thrilling story of Sombar the Pirate will lead you through a very adventurous tale with one surprise after another. Sombar is a regular thirteen year old orphan who lives under an old boat and survives in the streets of the small town, Portstanley. Sombar gets trapped into many tight situations, which he barely escapes. When the overweight jailer, Hock, was looking for someone to put in the empty prison, he accused Sombar of false theft. Sombar, scared and cornered by Hock on the dock, stole a small rowboat. Anything to get away from an angry jailer. This was the first of his numerous challenges. Constable Bragg is one of the few who does not see Sombar as a pirate, but as a young boy who got scared into running away. Bragg is a smart man with a lot of work on his hands, who takes care of quiet Portstanley as rumors of bloodthirsty pirates spread. Sombar's problems are not only from the people of Portstanley who accuse him of piracy, but also from the high seas. Captain Sleight, an ingenious man with wicked plans, who plunders and kills as he pleases, commands pirates to kidnap Sombar for a reward.
With the misled villagers wanting to hang Sombar, he must find a way out of jail and off to freedom. Will Sombar end the unrightful hatred against him, or will he be hanged before he reaches the age of fourteen? The encounter of Sombar the Pirate will make you wonder how life was for an orphan and ruthless pirates. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story and a daring adventure.
This is an engaging and engrossing tale of an orphan boy who is accused of being a pirate. It's a great sea story with wonderful dialogue. I would recommend it in particular for kids 8-13.
A refreshingly entertaining adventure story about a naive young boy who quickly grasps the importance of self reliance and resourcefulness. This perfectly happy, albeit homeless, youngster falls victim to the stupidity of minor bureaucracy. Trying desperately to evade capture for a trumped-up offense, he finds himself in several difficult and dangerous situations, not he least of which is being captured by pirates. Enter resourcefulness--as he lives out the dream of everyone who has ever fantasized about surviving against overwhelming odds. An unlikely friendship with a dissolute fellow sailor/prisoner results in a delightful and unexpected ending.
Vivid images of life at sea--the rigging of the sails, surviving attacks, dealing with friends and enemies are reminiscent of seafaring classics such as "Captains Courageous" and "Robinson Crusoe." Most of all "Sombar the Pirate" awakens our sense of adventure and our cheering for "the good guy" to triumph in the end.
An adventure story for boys and boys at heart, with rich characters and a warm message of optimism and self reliance in the face of bumbling adult dysfunction. Buy it and enjoy.
A very clever tale of an orphan boy swept into a dangerous game played between a smart, but ruthless pirate and an ambitious, small-town constable. Enthralling storytelling filled with colorful characters and adventures on the high seas. Suitable for any age. When the story's been told, questions linger about the unplanned effect of individual ambitions on others and the responsibilities of leaders. Most important is a lesson that if you're thoughtful, clever and patient, there is always hope in the face of terrible obstacles. Loved it!
Solid tale of adventure of an orphan teenager getting scared into an unexpected adventure at sea. Interesting and unique style of writing (might not work for everybody, but worked for me). Moreover, the characters in this book are not flat and static but full of surprises and actually develop and change in response to their experiences. Probably aimed at young teenagers. I'm not in that group of readers but still had fun and read it all in one sitting on my kindle. Might have given it 5 stars, but better books do exist ...
