These essays span the globe. Represented in the book are world walkers, scientists and archeologists, travelers, artists, explorers, and ordinary people who do extraordinary things. This book is a celebration of life, a tapestry of diversity, and a testament to living one’s dreams. This book contains 35 essays, stunning photography, and features inspirational explorers such as Wade Davis, Johan Reinhard, Helen Thayer, John Francis, Jon Turk, Pat Morrow, Don George, Jeff Fuchs, Lorie Karnath, Tony Mangan, Edwin Bernbaum, Mikael Strandberg, Brandon Wilson, Polly Letofsky, Levison Wood, Colin Monteath, James Dorsey, Maria Coffey, Steven Newman and many more. A unique book in the adventure travel genre and destined to become a classic in travel literature. "The history of walking and writing is almost as old as culture every step is a story, and every path tells. This marvelous collection adds a new mile to the written way, a new stride to the literature of the leg." -Robert Macfarlane, author of The Old Ways A Journey on Foot "It all changes, everything, and walking illustrates that elemental condition of our lives. Nothing else so completely clears our minds or lays bare the soul of place. This monumental book, full of graceful prose by writers and explorers, walks us through the familiar, the unfamiliar and downright strange." Highly recommended ~ Tim Cahill

Not since, Giorgio Vasari's, 16th century masterpiece, 'Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects', a series of biographies considered the most famous and influential writing on art and artists of the Italian Renaissance, has such an anthology been compiled.Don't be misled by the title of this book. It is not only for, or about, extreme long distance athletes or endurance walkers. It will be of interest, whether you are, a bus driver, burger-flipper, king, or president, anyone who has a dream, who has passion. It will be an inspiration to anyone who feels there is more to life, for within, you will read about people, not unlike yourself, who felt the same and took action. So, if your dream is to be a "Rock or Movie Star", save an endangered species, or be the best Mom or Dad in the world, take action. Thought manifested becomes reality! (Below, I have intertextualized the prologue from: "The Travels of Marco Polo".)
Doctors, Lawyers, and Indian Chiefs, and all people who wish to know about the various peoples and regions of the World, take this book, or download a version, and read it. For here you will find all the great wonders and curiosities of Asia, Africa, Europe, North, South, and Central America, and many other territories, as told to you by the Tribe Members of 'The Walkabout Chronicles', who have seen them with their own eyes. I will tell you that no other group of explorers, adventurers, scientists, and extreme distance walkers, have seen more of our planet's majesty and hidden places. For this reason Tor and Siffy Torkildson thought it a pity if a written record of these exploits were not made for posterity, so, they published this anthology of true accounts, that others may know and learn from this book of miracles.

The Walkabout Chronicles Epic Journeys by Foot The Chronicles Series Volume 1 Tor and Siffy Torkildson 9781533269744 Books Reviews
I met Tor randomly staying in the same transient billets in Eastern Europe. A random discussion about my soft-shell pants that I was wearing to travel back to the states turned into a very long discussion about trekking, alpinism, and travel. Tor told me about the book and I immediately got on my phone and bought it so it would be at my house waiting for me. The book did NOT disappoint. This is the ultimate adventure reader; a true classic. The compendium of so many different stories from different authors and the fact that it's a massive book with small type face gives it the quality of religious text. You can go to it, read a Chapter over the course of a few days, and then go back to whatever mundane reading you have to do in your professional life but you'll be back and probably sooner than you figured. Tor is a darn nice guy and now, having read (most of) his book I realize he's a good writer and editor. Be wary of who you meet while traveling as they may be really incredible people.
My first surprise, upon opening the box, was the size of this book. I expected a standard paperback but the large format made Candace Rose Rardon’s vivid, whimsical cover even more inviting, as if I was being beckoned to adventure. Perhaps it’s the sturdy bond paper or just the weight of the stories within, but this is a hefty tome. Siffy Torkildson’s maps and the many quotes and epigraphs sprinkled throughout serve as trail markers of sorts. I was first drawn in by Brandon Wilson’s tale of crossing the Alps, which opens with, “Strange things go through your mind when you’re dangling by a thin blue rope in the pelting rain, hanging on in a white-knuckled grip as a freezing wind pushes you back and forth like a pendulum over a 1000-meter chasm.” Though each story involves journeys afoot, the excursions often cross as much internal territory as they do physical space. That may mean learning to be receptive to a new Maasai acquaintance, or embarking on a 220 mile trek across Turkey alone, or simply committing to travel only by foot on a daily basis and what that means when your destination is 25 miles away. The stories in The Walkabout Chronicles are large and colorful and full of heart.
This is an absolute masterwork. Your eyes are are not deceiving you, it is indeed 7 x 1.1 x 10 inches big and clocks at a staggering 430 pages! The cast of writers that Tor and Siffy Torkildson managed to bring together is, frankly astonishing. Right off the bat, there's an introduction by Sir Ranulph Fiennes who states that this book "is likely to become a classic in adventure and travel literature". I would have to agree. Trying to list the high points about each author would take a long time and brevity in these reviews means that I can't. There are 38 of travel literature's best authors in these pages like Steven Newman, Don George, Lorie Karnath, Francis O'Donnell, Michael Kirtley, Johan Reinhard, Helen Thayer, Sophie Ibbotson and Pierre Delattre. Tor and SIffy's stories about Japan and Madagascar (respectively) are quite good also. Moataz Bonser's contribution regarding Mauritania and journey to the Richat Structure was particularly moving. After reading, I found myself seeking out more works by some of these authors that I wasn't as familiar with, a task made pretty easy by the inclusion of the "Author Resources" in the back. Besides all of the great stories, there's a tremendous number of complementary photos. Each author has a mini bio and a mini Q&A. See why this book is "highly recommended" by Tim Cahill. I truly can't wait for Volume II.
